A Brief Description of Destin Media Blasting

Nothing lasts forever, especially when it comes to the equipment used in all major industries across America. Paint is prone to chipping, steel is prone to rust, and some surfaces just can’t be cleaned with detergent and elbow grease.

This is where media blasting comes in to completely restore surfaces to their former gleaming glory. Also known as dry abrasive blasting, this process essentially strips the top layer of grime, dirt, rust, etc., from a surface and increases its longevity, tenfold.

If you want to know about how the process works, we have outlined it for you below.

How Does Media Blasting Work?

Media blasting is a brilliant form of abrasion that combines pressurized air and an abrasive material to strip the surface of hard-wearing materials. In essence, media blasting is almost the same as high-pressure washing, but instead of using water, small, abrasive particles are used instead. However, some forms of media blasting can use water as well.

Media blasting is popular across a myriad of applications in both commercial and industrial restoration. For example, some of the industries that regularly use media blasting include:

  • Food manufacturing
  • Foodservice
  • Automotive
  • Printing plants
  • Medical device manufacturing
  • Foundries
  • Mold and fire remediation
  • Pharmaceuticals and more

Media blasting is also very useful in terms of commercial restoration. This includes the removal of graffiti, the effects of rust and corrosion, as well as paint stripping. You can even strip softer types of surfaces such as wood and plastic with a reduced blasting pressure.

Within the media blasting industry, there are popular sub-categories, such as dry ice, soda blasting, and wet blasting. The sub-category is simply based on the type of media used during the blasting process.

It’s important to note that there is a clear-cut difference between media blasting and sandblasting, although the terms are often used interchangeably. Sandblasting is a process that’s a little outdated or old-fashioned and uses a form of media known as silica sand, which produces a great deal of harmful dust.

Dry Ice Blasting

This is a popular means of media blasting because you can clean almost any type of surface. The reason for this is because dry ice is extremely frigid and brittle and works much like high-pressure washing, only far more effective.

It’s best used to remove the build-up of soot, oil, resins, paint, ink, tar, asphalt, and more.

Soda Blasting

This is a great option if you need to clean or restore a surface with a softer touch. It’s pretty similar to sandblasting, but instead of silica sand, soda blasting uses baking soda as a medium.

It’s ideal for the removal of rust, paint, graffiti, and stubborn stains. The process is also beneficial because it neutralizes rust, without damaging the material underneath it.

Wet Sand Blasting

During this process, dry river sand combines with water to produce an effective means of stripping and cleaning surfaces. The combination of these two materials makes for a perfectly clean finish on almost any surface.

All of these media blasting methods are ideal for the restoration and cleaning of heavy equipment, as well as commercial areas. The cleanup is quicker, non-flammable, and non-conductive. Equipment does not need to be disassembled, and it’s also safe for all employees without exposure to harsh chemicals.
